Falling down & Getting up / God loves us and wants us to love Him

K-Gr. 6
For the next 3 weeks we are taking a break from “What’s Bugging You” and focusing on a new curriculum about the Olympics! Since the Summer Olympics is currently taking place, we thought this to be suitable.

On Sunday, the kids heard about Samson which fits well with this week’s theme “Falling Down, & Getting Up.”
When good things happen, it’s easy to forget about God and to think we need to depend only on ourselves. Samson gave away his secret of strength that God gave him and in return became a prisoner.
Samson lost sight of God, but the good news is that God is always willing to forgive us and to give us a second chance!
Our verse for the next 3 weeks is “Do you not know that in a race all runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.” 1 Corinthians 9:24

If you would like to go deeper in the story of Samson, take some time to read the following:
Judges 13
Judges 14
Judges 16:4-30

Today’s Prayer:
God, thank you for your amazing love that never quits. Help me in the times when I feel like I can do it with my own strength and my own way; to refocus and set my sights on the goal that you have put before me.
Thank you, in Jesus name; Amen

Today I learned.
God loves us and wants us to love him.

Story found in Exodus 20:1-11

On Sunday the children learned that God loves us and wants us to love him. They reviewed the Ten Commandments and learned about God’s love for them. They talked about ways to express their love to God.

 Help me learn this:
“I obey your commandments with all my heart” (psalm 119:69b)

 Ask me:
Why did God give us the Ten Commandments?
How can you show God you love him?
How can we show God that our whole family loves him?

Family Fun
Express your love for God as a family with a Pray ‘n’ Praise Night. Set out a variety of items to use as musical instruments. Include plastic bowls, large spoons, and pan lids. Invite each family member to choose an “instrument”. Then play a recording of a praise song and play along. When you’re finished, have a quiet prayer time and thank God for his love.

The Scoop – August

Worship / God loves us and gives us rules to keep us safe and happy

K-Gr. 6 Class

What Should I See?
God created us to love Him!

Bible Byte:
King Asa was a man who worshiped God. He went from town to town tearing down the false idols that other people worshipped. King Asa even removed his own grandmother from being Queen because she didn’t worship God. God rewarded King Asa for his love for Him. He brought peace to the land that King Asa lived in. King Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of God. He was faithful to God, and God continued to bless him. However, when King Asa grew old, he turned from God and he was punished. He suffered and so did his land. It’s important to worship God our entire life.  (Source: 1 Kings 15:10-24, 2 Chronicles 14-16))

What’s The Key?
God created us for His pleasure. When we worship God we show our love for Him. We worship God through our actions. Praying, singing and making right choices with our life are all acts of worship!

What’s That To Me?
The Bible says we MUST love the Lord with everything we’ve got and in everything we do.

How Should I Be?
We should have an attitude of worship everyday, not just when we go to church. This shows our love for God.

Today I learned…
God loves us and gives us rules to keep us safe and happy
Story found in Exodus 19:3 – 20:17

On Sunday the children learned that God loves us and gives us rules to keep us safe and happy. They heard about the ten commandments and how God gave them to Moses so that the Israelites would live safe, happy lives. Children talked about the importance of rules.

Help Me Learn This
“I obey your commandments with all my heart.” Psalm 119:69

 Ask Me
What special rules did God give to Moses?
Can you name one of Gods commandments?
How can our family obey Gods special rules?

Family Fun
Have a family games night. Invite family members to bring their favorite board game to share. Play one of the games without rules, and then point out how rules help make games fun. Mention that Gods rules make our lives safe and happy. Play the rest of the games with the appropriate rules.

Created us for His Purpose / God loves us and can do anything

K-6 Class
On Sunday the kids learned that we were created with a purpose. Nothing God made was made by accident.

What Should I See?
God created everything! God had a plan for how He created everything. Nothing on earth was made by accident.

Bible Byte:
God made the earth, space, stars, water, wind; even time, out of nothing—all He had to do was speak and it happened! After everything He made, God said that it was good. It was all exactly how He planned it, day by day. Day One: God created light, and made day and night. Day Two: God created sky and air. Day Three: God created land, sea, grass, plants and trees. Day Four: God created the sun, moon and stars. Day Five: God created birds and fish. Day Six: God created animals, insects, reptiles and people. Day Seven: God rested. Genesis Chapter 1 (Source Genesis 1)

What’s The Key?
God did not make any accidents. Even weird little bugs were part of God’s plan. And if God cares about all the little bugs, then He really cares about us. The Bible says that we are made in His image!

What Should I See
God made me a certain way with abilities and strengths. No one else is like me! God has a unique plan just for me! He already knows my future, what kind of job I’ll have, where I’ll live and what I will be doing in the future.

How Should I Be?
I can thank God for the talents and abilities He has given me and try to use them the best that I can. I can pray to God to help show me good things to do with my life.

Today I learned…
God loves us and can do anything

Story from Exodus 13:17-15:2

Today your child learned that God loves us and can do anything. The preschoolers heard a story about how God parted the Red Sea so that Moses and the Israelites could escape Pharoah’s soldiers. They expressed their thanks to God for His love and power.

Help me learn this:
“I obey your commandments with all my heart” Psalm 119:69

Ask Me
What is God like?
How did God help Moses and his people escape?
When can you ask God to help you?

Family Fun
Make Red Sea pudding cups for dessert. Stir blue food coloring into instant vanilla pudding. Pour the pudding into cups. Let family members “part the sea” by drawing a spoon down the center of the pudding. Ask your child to tell you the story of how God parted the Red Sea.

This week we heard about John the Baptist and how we need to prepare our hearts so we are ready to do what God asks us to do.
In this Creative Mode activity it will take some preparing of the heart to make the finished project look good!

Directions:
1. Clip off a floral wire of thelength you want to work with and bend it into a heart shape.
2. Next, tie yarn onto that heart and pull yarn across it.
3. After that do the same for other side of the heart.
4. Tie a knot and cut yarn with enough length for hanging.

You’re done. Repeat the process as many times as many hearts you want to see on your windows.

Supplies:
Scissors
Yarn
Floral Wire

Prepare / God Loves us and Wants us to be His Helpers

K-Gr.6 Class
Yesturday we started a new curriculemn called “What’s Bugging You.”
This past Sunday the kids learned about Preparing their Hearts for God to use them. God created us for a purpose: His Purpose.

What Should I See?
I can prepare my heart and mind to learn about God.

Bible Byte:
John the Baptist lived alone out in the desert until he began preaching. He wore clothes made out of camel hair and he ate locusts and wild honey. When he started preaching, he told people to turn away from their sin because the kingdom of heaven was near. People came from all over to see and listen to John. Those who were sorry for their sins confessed them and he baptized them in the Jordan River. He explained to the crowd that he only baptized with water, but someday One was coming who was more powerful than him. He was talking about Jesus. John was preparing the way for Jesus to come and save them. He wanted the people to prepare their hearts to receive the things that Jesus would tell them.  (Source: Matthew 3:1-12)

What’s The Key?
John the Baptist wanted people to be ready when Jesus came. He knew someone more important was coming. He told the people to repent or turn away from their sins. They needed to stop doing wrong things and get ready for better things. We need to be ready for better things too. God has a plan for us, but we will not learn about it unless we get ourselves ready.

What’s That To Me?
I am not here just to take up space. God loves me and created me for a purpose. Before I can know what that is, I need to prepare my heart. Am I willing to come to church and hear about God? Am I willing to read the Bible and see what God has to say to me? Do I want to make wise choices so I can help others and grow closer to God? If my heart is not ready, then I will not be able to learn what God has to say to me. I need to choose to prepare my heart and mind.

How Should I Be?
How do I prepare myself? I can come to church and hear about God. I can talk to God anytime in prayer. I can ask Him to forgive the wrong things I do and to help me learn more. When I spend time reading the Bible or coming to church, I am choosing to prepare myself to learn. This week I can decide to do even one new thing to get myself ready. Some examples can be memorizing a new verse, reading daily from Psalms, getting involved in a small group or listening to a worship CD.

Today I Learned…
God Loves us and Wants us to be His Helpers

Story from Exodus 3:1-12

On Sunday the children learned that God loves us and wants us to be his helper. They heard how God called Moses to be his helper and lead the Israelites out of Egypt. The children talked about ways they could be God’s special helper.

Help me Learn This
“I obey your commandments with all my heart.” Psalm 119:69

Ask Me
Who called Moses to be a special helper?
How can we be Gods special helper?
How can we help each other in our family?

Family Fun
Be special helpers to someone who may be feeling sick or sad. Show family members how to make wrapping paper flowers. Have them each gather an 8 inch paper circle in the center and then wrap a chenille wire around it as a stem. Use a ribbon to tie the flowers together. Deliver the bouquet with bright smiles!
